The San Diego Concert Band (SDCB) is a prominent, 100-member community symphonic band comprised of amateur, music educator, and professional musicians. Founded in 1989 as the La Mesa Community Band, the ensemble serves adult musicians (aged 18 to 80+) who perform a wide mix of wind literature including marches, show tunes, movie scores, and classic symphonic pieces under the direction of Roy Anthony, Jr.. [1, 2]
Performances and Venue Information
The band splits its schedule between formal seasonal concerts and casual community outings: [1]
-
- Formal Concerts: Typically hosted at the Joan B. Kroc Theater in East San Diego for annual holiday and spring productions.
- Summer Series: The ensemble hits the road for relaxed “concerts in the park”. They are regular features at local traditions such as La Mesa’s Sundays at Six at Harry Griffen Park and Balboa Park’s Twilight in the Park at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion. [1, 2, 3]
Joining and Rehearsals
If you are an adult instrumentalist looking to perform, the ensemble offers a welcoming space for musicians: [1]
- Auditions: There are no formal performance auditions required for general admission. New members undergo a simple placement assessment by their section principal. [1, 2]
- Commitment: Members rehearse once per week to prepare for the concert cycles. [1]
- Age Limits: Participation is restricted to adults aged 18 and older. High school musicians can occasionally join on explicit director recommendation, primarily during the summer.
